  • Arts-based evaluation

Project Description

Operation Youth Success (OYS) is a collective impact initiative designed to reduce the need of the juvenile justice system in Douglas County, Nebraska. OYS works across the juvenile justice system from prevention to re-entry. TerraLuna has conducted the developmental evaluation of OYS since 2016. As part of the developmental evaluation TerraLuna uses phenomological approaches to qualitative inquiry to elevate the lived experiences of youth tangled up in the system. The narratives and lived experiences of youth provide a foundation for developmental feedback to the initiative.

Deliverables

  • Jeff Severns Guntzel, with artist Kazimir Lee Iskander, created a comic book-style consent form for youth. This evaluation product accomplished three goals:

Affirmed that the participant’s story belonged to them,

    1. Affirmed their rights in the process of being interviews, and
    2. Disassociated the symbols associated with being interviewed or interrogated by law enforcement officers, probation officers, or case managers from the process of being interviewed to tell one’s lived experience.

*Note – we use a separate form for collecting parent or legal guardian consent.
